The Sugarloaf (in Portuguese, Pão de Açúcar) is a monolith which is instantaneously recognisable as a sight of Rio De Janeiro. That, coupled with the fact there’s a Sugarloaf elsewhere than Monmouth (Steve: Actually, Abergavenny :) )meant it was a must do on the Mace sightseeing tour. Sagui monkeys and fresh coconut water accompanied us on this Sugarloaf walk though…

The Christ the Redeemer statue is the largest Art Deco sculpture in the world, and one of the famous landmarks in Rio de Janeiro overlooking the city from the top of Corcovado mountain. When we heard it was possible to climb from Parque Lage, we thought we’d give it a go. Budget friendly exercise, plus it turned out to be a beautiful hike that meant we definitely deserved some large Caipirinhas in Lapa afterwards!

First 24hrs in Rio! Includes such delights as Copacabana Beach and Rio water…

P1030559.JPG

We’re here, we’ve done it, we’ve hightailed it out of the UK in style – chauffeur driven (thanks Dad!), drinking Champagne (thanks Jenny!) and were then plied with alcohol and stuffed with food (thanks British Airways!). A late night packing and an early morning cleaning meant that finally getting on the flight was a sigh of relief. But… what was Rio going to be like? Would our hostel be crawling with roaches? Would British Airways lose our bags? Would we end up on a deserted island a la Lost?!

Itinerary: South America

South America ThumbWe’re even closer to heading off – more goodbyes have been said at Kelly & Ben’s amazing wedding this weekend and we’ve both now had our last day at work. Current weather in Rio as I write is a balmy 28°c! We’re now hopefully pretty close to actually knowing our route so all the details are below. Its still, and always will be, in flux, but that is the nature and fun of backpacking!

Geoldi's Monkey: They are highly sociable and use over 40 different calls to communicate.
We’re nearly there, house virtually let, various assets almost sold, house mostly vacated, gear & gadgets mostly purchased. Our flight to Rio is only a fortnight away!

So, in further preparation we thought we’d take a visit to The Living Rainforest, an eco-greenhouse in Hampstead Norreys, just off Junction 13 on the M4. Yes… in the UK. Vastly smaller than the real thing, it was interesting to see some of the animals and plants in their non-native environment for a bit of comparison. A great visit, its £8.75 each for adults & £6.75 for children (family ticket available) for an annual pass. I can’t believe we’ve lived in Reading for four years and only recently found that this place existed!
