“I couldn’t possibly go travelling, I’d get bored!”
When a friend said this to us recently, we were more than a bit shocked. We’d had a cracking time. But thinking about it… maybe others would also think it was boring? Maybe some would find it one big world of pain? Others perhaps others would find our journey the best thing since sliced bread? For us, careering from one hostel to the next, taking night buses to the middle of nowhere and never knowing what insect or animal is going to cause the most problems for that day had both its ups and downs – but overall it was one of the greatest experiences we’ve had to date.
Anyway, to help you make up your own mind, we kept a one liner daily diary of our year away. Hopefully this is useful for anybody planning a similar route and will set some expectations or give some ideas on your own travel route!
When looking to travel in Brazil, you’ll find the actual logistics of travel can be the most expensive part; and while the buses are fantastic (much better than UK) the are frequently as expensive as flights – which by reputation aren’t exactly cheap! However, we’ve just flown with Gol airlines and were so impressed I’m dedicating this entire post to them.
We’re even closer to heading off – more goodbyes have been said at Kelly & Ben’s amazing wedding this weekend and we’ve both now had our last day at work. Current weather in Rio as I write is a balmy 28°c! We’re now hopefully pretty close to actually knowing our route so all the details are below. Its still, and always will be, in flux, but that is the nature and fun of backpacking!
We have now put together our draft itinerary! Which will no doubt change but at least we’ve got a plan! It’d be fantastic if you could come and visit us wherever we might be, and if you’re planning on sharing a hostel with us we can guarantee accommodation will be very reasonable! Also, if you know anybody particularly friendly (who isn’t into cannibalism or kidnapping) or any recommendations then please let us know.
PS – Our first flight is booked… Heathrow to Rio 21st May… another step forward!
Its hard to convey just how breath taking the view was in every decoration!

Random Travelling Notes
In South America, the sewage system is not up to the task of carrying paper waste through the toilet so you have to put it in bins. Pray they are changed regularly!
